Tall Ship Sagres stops in Newport, open for tours today

Portuguese Navy’s 292-foot Tall Ship Sagres has arrived in Newport.

The 81-year-old ship is docked at Fort Adams State Park from June 5th – 7th and will be open for free tours today (June 5th) from 12 pm to 5 pm, according to Joe Dias, Executive Director, of Fort Adams Trust.

UPDATE: Tours today (6/5) 2pm-6pm and tours tomorrow 6/6 10am-12pm & 2pm-5pm.

After visiting Newport, Sagres will visit Boston from June 9th – 14th. The ship’s stop in Bean Town coincides with a visit to the City by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the 20th and current President of Portugal.

Sagres’ sister-ship Tall Ship Eagle  made a Port Call to Newport from May 7th – 9th, during the Volvo Ocean Race Newport Stopover. The 295-foot Barque Eagle,  the flagship of the U.S. Coast Guard, serves as a training vessel for cadets at the Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School. The Eagle is the only active-duty sailing vessel in America’s military, and one of only two commissioned sailing vessels, along with the USS Constitution
