Happy New Year! This week, “Six Picks” is all about some of our favorite Rhode Island artists, homecoming shows and a couple of RI ex-pats – back to show us what they’ve learned out on the road.
Deer Tick at Blues Café Thursday and Friday
In recent years, they’ve basically become the house band at Newport Folk. Providence born and bred rockers Deer Tick play shows tonight and tomorrow at the Newport Blues Café. The band is riding high on two new albums – Vol. 1 (acoustic) and Vol. 2 (electric). The boys head to Boston for New Years Eve and on to Europe in January, back to the states in February and a tour of Australia in March. Friday’s show is sold out, but a few tickets remain for tonight’s show here. Newport’s Z-Boys open at 8PM.
Dylan Sevey at Pump House Thursday
RI native and current Nashville resident Dylan Sevey (pictured above) returns home to South County for a show tonight at Pump House Music Works. Sevey has recorded and toured heavily with Ron Gallo (formerly of Toy Soldiers), for past last year – playing over 150 shows. Tonight, he’ll put down his drum sticks and pick up his guitar as he fronts his own band the Gentlemen – including David Ponte on lead guitar, Brendan Moore on keyboards, Devin Stimson on bass, and Keaton Albro on drums. Details here.
Tom Petty Tribute at Columbus Friday
Everybody loves Tom Petty, especially musicians. His keen lyricism, jingle jangle guitar sound, and singalong choruses have rocked the music world since the 1970’s. His loss this year was especially jarring. “Something from a Dream,” is a special show Friday to benefit Girls Rock RI at the Columbus Theatre in Providence. Hordes of RI’s finest including Dylan Sevey, The Quahogs, Josh Buckley, The “Mericans, Jen Long, and Allysen Callery will honor Petty and his music. It’s just about sold out – details here.
Kilgore at Fete Friday
Kilgore formed in 1990 at La Salle Academy in Providence, and today includes songwriter Brian McKenzie on guitar, Bill Southerland on drums, Jason Smith on bass, Eric Linsao on guitar and Jay Berndt on vocals. Their hardcore rock sound has shaken up the local music world ever since. The band has an EP release show Friday night at Fete. Get those earplugs locked and loaded for a night of rawk with openers Thy Will Be Done, Birch Hill Damn and On Your Deathbead. Details here.
