Second-grader at Pell Elementary School honored with Newport Police Department’s first ‘Young Hero Award’

Pell Elementary second grade student Andrew Novaes, was honored this morning by a contingent of officers from Newport’s Police and Fire Department, who visited Mrs. Bonnie Cecil’s classroom at the Pell School to present the Newport Police Department’s First Young Hero Award.

According to a press release from Newport Public Schools, Andrew’s mother, Tatiana Lima de Miranda, recently had a medical emergency and Andrew’s quick thinking led him to call 911.  Andrew calmly listened to the emergency operator and followed directions, letting the first responders into his home, guiding them to his mother, which allowed them to provide medical care and possibly save his mother’s life.

Community Police Office Matthew Jepson, Office Donald Warner, Jr., Officer Nicholas St. Lawrence under the direction of Lt. Frank Rosa, surprised Andrew in class and recognized him for his heroic efforts. Joining the Newport Police officers were Firefighter Kevin Kosinski, Firefighter Wayne Beebe, Jr., Lt. Michael Folliard and Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Redmond of the Newport Fire Department.
