Hold your horses…! Rhody Squash players, families and volunteers invite members of the community to the annual Rhody Squash fund-raiser, which will be a ‘Derby Day’ party and silent auction on Saturday, May 6th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Newport Vineyards.

Tickets are only $45/each and include one complimentary drink and light fare. A silent auction, with many items donated from local businesses, boutiques, and artists, will also be held during the event. Visit the Rhody Squash Facebook page for more information.

“The 2016-17 Rhody Squash team was comprised of 16 boys and girls in 5th through 8th grades from Thompson and Gaudet Middle Schools,” said director Ann Guinan. “This was a fantastic year both on the court and in the classroom and I am very proud of everything these kids have accomplished,” Guinan said. In addition to squash instruction twice weekly for every team member, Rhody Squash also provides two hours per week of academic tutoring which gives kids one-on-one attention to help with homework and study for school quizzes and tests. Rhody Squash also gives 8th grade students SSAT tutoring for those applying to private high schools.

“We are thankful to St George’s School for the use of their state-of-the-art squash facility where we practice from October through May and host squash tournaments,” Guinan said. “We are also very excited about our recent partnership with the YMCA of Newport County, where new squash courts will be built in the next two years and will become Rhody Squash’s new home. The game of squash continues to grow on Aquidneck Island and we are very excited to be part of the YMCA’s investment in this fantastic sport,” Guinan said.

The Rhody Squash program is completely free to all students and strives to be in partnership with school and family to provide a nurturing and supportive environment. On the squash courts, Rhody Squash players have three volunteer coaches, who teach the basics of the game and help fine tune strategy, technique and gamesmanship. In the classroom, Rhody Squash had two volunteer academic tutors offering one-on-one help with all subjects. Rhody Squash also participates in many local community service projects including Clean Ocean Access clean-ups, the PMC Bike Ride benefitting the Jimmy Fund and a local seed and bulb planting at Blenheim-Newport Retirement and Assisted Living Facility in Middletown.

“We plan to continue building the Rhody Squash organization through the support of our board of directors, local community and volunteers,” Guinan said. “Our fund-raiser is a great opportunity for community members to support the program and learn more about what Rhody Squash can offer to boys and girls in Newport County,” Guinan concluded.
