Richard Price is an educator, a survivor, and among the hidden treasures of Rhode Island’s rich musical scene. A former lead trumpet player with the legendary Lionel Hampton, played with the Count Basie Orchestra, and is often called upon at major events to play his very special version of the National Anthem. He’s also a member of the Buglers Hall of Fame, and on any given day might be found with his trumpet practicing along Providence’s waterfront.

It was just a few years ago that Richie questioned whether he’d play another note, battling a severe kidney ailment. A successful kidney transplant allowed Richie to return to music and the classroom. He recently retired from his teaching position at Portsmouth Middle School.

Price joined me on AM 1540 WADK to discuss all of that and more.
