Paula Mills Washburn, 75, of Newport passed away peacefully at home surrounded by
her loved ones on Saturday, June 24, 2017 after a brief illness.
She was the devoted wife of Kenneth W. Washburn for 34 years.
Paula was the loving mother of ten children and two step-daughters: Caroline F.
Conneen (Patrick) of Fredericksburg, VA; Anne Foxley of Newport, RI; Matthew Foxley
of Los Angeles, CA; Jennifer Foxley of Sacramento, CA; Susan Foxley (John Smith) of
Los Angeles, CA; Sara Smith (Scott) of Colorado Springs, CO; Catherine Cohen
(Laurence) of Denver, CO; Daniel Foxley (Megan) of San Diego, CA; Paul Grimm
(Stephanie) of Middletown, RI; Kristin Covert (Mike) of Astoria, OR; Ellen Martin (Terry)
of Larchmont, NY; and William Foxley (deceased). She is also survived by 21 adoring
grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two sisters: Treasa Cassedy of West Palm
Beach, FL and Judith Rector (Peter) of Portsmouth, RI.
Born October 9, 1941, in New Rochelle, NY, Paula was the daughter of Anthony B. and
Caroline F. Cassedy. She was one of 6 children raised in Weston, CT and attended St.
Mary’s College in South Bend, IN.
Paula was a devout Catholic and had an encyclopedic knowledge of Christian theology.
She studied and practiced the teachings of St. John Paul II, St. Teresa of Calcutta, St.
Faustina, and St. Birgitta. Paula was a strong woman with a keen sense of humor and
insight into people. She had a natural and easy way about her sharing warmth,
kindness, and compassion with everyone she encountered — whether her own children,
best friends or passersby — often waving and smiling to strangers. Her naturally beautiful
smile, intelligence, gentle demeanor, and generous gift of love will forever
remain her legacy.
A Mass in celebration of Paula’s life will be held on Saturday, July 8th at 10:30 a.m. at
Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Salve Regina University, 100 Ochre Point Avenue, Newport,
The burial will be private and calling hours are respectfully omitted.
