Is there a historic preservation project, completed in the last three years, that sticks out to you as having enriched the character of the city of Newport? Is there an individual whose contributions to preserving Newport merit recognition? Here’s your chance to nominate an organization, individual, or building for this year’s Doris Duke Awards for Historic Preservation!
A joint program of the Newport Restoration Foundation and the City of Newport, the annual Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards encourages excellence in historic preservation within the City of Newport by recognizing exemplary historic preservation projects and educational activities, and by acknowledging individuals who have made significant, lifetime contributions to the preservation of the built environment.
Newport Restoration Foundation is calling upon city residents to nominate their favorite project in the past three years that has truly enriched and added value to the character of Newport. The winners will be acknowledged at an awards ceremony held at Rough Point in Newport on Friday, September 8, 2017. Please see below for award criteria and the process for submitting your nomination.
- Eligible recipients are individuals, non-profit or for-profit organizations/institutions, and federal, state or local agencies. The owner of the building or site is the official recipient of the award; however, major contributors can be recognized at the awards ceremony. Properties that are currently (or anticipated to be) listed for sale will not be considered.
- All project and site work must have been completed within the last three years.
- The awards committee encourages a wide variety of project types for nomination, from small buildings to large, landscapes or streetscapes, education or advocacy projects, sustainable or adaptive preservation, or projects that highlight craftsmanship.
- Up to three awards are made annually, with the awards committee reserving the right to designate additional awards under extraordinary circumstances.
NOMINATION PROCESS & GUIDELINES
Nominations are solicited annually and may be made with or without the knowledge of the nominee. This year’s deadline for submission of nominations is June 15, 2017.
Submitting Nominations: Nominations must be submitted electronically, as a single PDF document. If your nomination is over 5 megabytes, please deliver it through a web-based platform such as Dropbox. Complete nominations should be submitted to Shantia Anderheggen, Director of Preservation, at firstname.lastname@example.org. The following information must be included:
- a nomination form;
- a minimum of four (4) color photographs with captions (300 dpi/480×600 pixels) that illustrate and describe the nominated project; before and after;
- architectural drawings associated with the project, including existing and proposed conditions.
The submission of historic images and background material is strongly encouraged. Please note that the awards committee may also request additional information from the nominating party.
