Newport (18 – 18) saw its five-game win streak come to an end on Sunday night in a 10–4 loss to the Vermont Mountaineers (16 – 21). Holden Powell dropped to 1–3 on the summer after giving up five runs on two hits and five walks in 4.1 innings of work.

Tim Tawa started the game with a leadoff double, setting up an RBI single from Jack Gethings to give Newport an early 1–0 lead. Dalton Reed made it 2–0 in the top of the fourth with his tenth home run of the season, but the Gulls would not score again until the top of the ninth.

Powell was sharp through the first four innings, recording five strikeouts while allowing just one hit, but ran into trouble in the fifth. The Mountaineers scored seven runs on five hits and four walks including a grand slam by 2017 Newport Gull Liam McGill.

Vermont would add one more run in the sixth and two in the seventh to extend its lead to 10–2. The Gulls showed some fight in the top of the ninth scoring two runs on a solo homer by Dillon Plew and an RBI by Jack Gethings but could not erase the eight-run deficit in the end.

The Mountaineers outhit the Gulls 13 to 11 in the game while 10 walks from Newport pitching provided Vermont with ample opportunities to score runs late in the game.

Newport will be back in action on Tuesday night when it heads to Paul Walsh Field to take on the New Bedford Bay Sox (16 – 21) for the fifth time this season, first pitch set for 6:30 p.m.
