Newport County Road Construction Report: June 5 – 10


Here is what’s happening for road work, closures and detours in and around Newport County this week.

Roadwork scheduled by Rhode Island Department Of Transportation: 6/3-6/9

Newport: Rte. 138 East and West, from the Newport Bridge to Admiral Kalfbus Rd., partial right lane closures in a moving operation for striping, Monday-Thursday nights from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day.

Portsmouth/Middletown: Rte. 114 North and South, from Bristol Ferry Rd. to Oliphant Ln., watch for our crews in a moving operation for mowing, Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Newport/Jamestown: Rte. 138 on the Newport Pell Bridge, only one lane of traffic is open for Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority bridge deck repair work until late June. Expect delays.

Jamestown: Southwest Ave. North, from Hamilton Ave. to Narragansett Ave., partial right lane closure in a moving operation for drainage work, Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Middletown: Rte. 114 (West Main Rd.) North, from Commercial St. to Rockwood Rd., possible lane shifts and closures for construction, Monday-Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Newport: In order to accommodate construction work at the Newport Transportation and Visitors Center, motorists will experience a right lane closure on America’s Cup Ave., from Gladys Carr Bolhouse Rd. to West Marlborough St., through June 2017.  RIPTA has designated temporary bus stop locations along America’s Cup Avenue since the Visitors’ Center boarding area will be closed for the duration of the project.  For more information, please visit https://www.ripta.com/newport-gateway-center

Newport Pell Bridge

Eastbound Right Lane Closure -6/5 to 6/9- 7 am to 2:30 pm
East Shore Road Lane Closures- 6/5 to 6/9- 7 am to 3:30 pm
Overnight: Eastbound Lane Closure-6/4 to 6/8 -9 pm to 5 am

*NPB Roadway Deck Repair Project*
-For the period from 5/30 to 6/29 there will be work taking place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with
Permanent Lane Closures and single lanes of travel on the Newport side of the bridge both East
and Westbound. The Eastbound Open Road Tolling (ORT) Lane will also be closed during this
period.

Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge – There are currently no Lane Closures on the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge.
Route 138 Connector – There are currently no Lane Closures on the Route 138 Connector.

Mount Hope Bridge – Overnight: Northbound Lane Closure-6/4 – 6 pm to 5 am -6/6 and 6/7- 9 pm to 5 am North and Southbound Alternating Lane Closures- 6/5- 9 pm to 5 am Southbound Lane Closure- 6/8- 9 pm to 5 am

Sakonnet River Bridge – There are currently no Lane Closures on the Sakonnet River Bridge.The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is currently removing the old Sakonnet River Bridge and occasionally
will have Southbound lane closures on Route 24 to allow construction vehicles to enter and leave the site.

City Of Newport Construction Notices

Cliff Walk Repairs 2016-17

The Cliff Walk is now OPEN to pedestrians throughout the length of the walk. There is additional work which will require occasional daily detours as the contractor completes other work along the Cliff Walk.

Funding for the project comes from a National Park Service Hurricane Sandy Relief Grant, administered by the Rhode Island Historical Preservation & Heritage Commission, Rhode Island Department of Transportation, and the City of Newport.

We thank you all for your patience while construction continues on the Cliff Walk.

Roadway Improvement Program 2017-18

The project purpose is to pave roads and reconstruct sidewakls throughout the City.

Contractor: LAL Contruction Company, Inc., Fall River, MA

Status: Under construction.

Streets with sidewalks will have their sidewalks and curbs replaced and adjusted.  It will likely take numerous weeks for the contractor to work through the several streets and long lengths of sidewalk.  Once a few streets have all sidewalks and curbing rehabilitated, the top finish pavement will be placed.  We appreciate your patience through this process.  Residents and business owners will be allowed access to their properties at all times, however, some minor inconveniences may be experienced while contractor is directly in front of property.

Parking may be restricted from 7 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday as work progresses.

Seawalls Program 2017-18

The project purpose is to reconstruct and repair existing seawalls throughout the city.

Sidewalk Improvement Program 2016-17

The project purpose is to fix small areas of sidewalks throughout the City that are beyond the capabilities of the City maintenance crews but do not required the total reconstruction of a road.

Project areas include small sidewalk areas on the following streets:

Carroll Avenue: Morton Avenue to Bateman Avenue – under construction
Harrison Avenue: Carroll Avenue to Roseneath Avenue – under construction
Memorial Boulevard: Freebody Street to Middleton Avenue – to be completed
Ochre Point Avenue: Narragansett Avenue to Webster Street – under construction
Spring Street: McAllister Street to Pope Street plus wheelchair ramp at Barney Street – under construction
Washington Square: minor bluestone sidewalk repairs – to be completed
Long Wharf Crosswalk at Marriott – to be completed
Marlborough Street: Dr. Marcus Wheatland to Thames Street – completed
Goat Island Connector: Washington Street to Goat Island Causeway – completed

Status: Under construction
Progress: 46%

Hunter Park Basketball Court Reconstruction 2017

The Hunter Park Basketball Court will be reconstructed leaving a one-hoop, half court (65 feet wide, 43 feet long) facility with foul and 3-point lines in the same general location as the existing court.

Narragansett Improvement Co. (NICO) is working to restore city roadways and sidewalks throughout the city.

Contractor: Narragansett Improvement Company

Status: Road work is substantially complete.
Progress: 99.5%
Contract Amount: $3,461,277.09 approved docket April 25, 2016. (includes $30,690.00 CDBG funding)
Contract Completion: November 20, 2016

Parking may be restricted from 7 AM to 4 PM Monday through Friday. Roads may be closed during working hours, but will generally remain open to local traffic.

Pavement Marking Program 2016-17
Safety Marking Inc. will begin work to repaint pavement markings throughout the city.

Contractor: Safety Marking Inc.
Status: Under construction
Location: City-wide on roadways with existing pavement markings.

Progress: 70%
Contract Amount: $75,028.30 approved docket September 15, 2016.
Contract Completion: June 30, 2017

Project includes line and symbol painting/striping on the following streets:

Spring Street *: Completed
Thames Street *: Completed
Broadway: Bike Sharrows will be installed from Admiral Kalbfus to Farewell Street.

Broadway Streetscape Improvement Project
Cardi Corporation is working to restore the Broadway corridor as part of this complete-streets project.

Status: Under construction
Location: Broadway (Farewell Street to Cranston Avenue)

Landscaping and sidewalks are being completed along with other miscellaneous work.
