The Newport County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to offer scholarships to children and or grandchildren of Chamber members and their employees who are graduating from local area high schools.  The two scholarships, each in the amount of $500, are awarded on the basis of academic achievement, community involvement, and the quality of letter of request from the applicant.

This year, the Chamber had fifteen very strong candidates with a range of qualifications. After careful consideration and overview of the candidates’ credentials two recipients were chosen, Andrew Thibeault from Middletown High School and Colin Martin from Rogers High School. The recipients were awarded their scholarships at the Chamber’s After Hours on Thursday, June 23rd at Newport Hospital.

Andrew Thibeault, a 2015 graduate of Middletown High School will continue his education at the University of Connecticut pursuing a degree in Actuarial Sciences including mathematics and finance. While at Middletown High School Andrew took challenging AP level classes, was very involved in extra curricula activities such as Model United Nations, Mock Trials, Student Council, the Leo Club, The Rhode Warriors First Robotics Team as well as sports team’s throughout his high school career.

Colin Martin, a 2015 graduate, will head to Boston College in the fall to start at the Carroll School of Management where he will pursue concentrations in Economics and International Affairs. While at Rogers High School, Colin won the Inaugural Rhode Island Scholar Athlete Award, was on the National Honor Society, the Spanish National Honor Society, as well as being the capitan of the Rogers High School Varsity Swim Team and part of the Kingfish Rhode Island Swim Club. Colin maintained an excellent GPA and is a top student in many AP courses, his hard work, compassion for others and dedication to detail has made him so successful.

The Chamber would like to congratulate both Andrew and Colin on working incredibly hard throughout their high school career and wish them luck in the next part of their education. The Newport County Chamber of Commerce with their Ambassador Committee is happy to award both of these scholarships.

To be eligible for scholarship consideration next year, applicants must submit a completed application, letter of request, school transcripts and a letter of reference in April of 2017.
