Newport and Middletown Restaurants Ready to Compete in Great Chowder Cook Off on June 10th

Newport Waterfront Events’ 36th Annual Great Chowder Cook-Off, taking place on Saturday, June 10th from noon to 6:00 p.m. at Fort Adams State Park, will feature Newport’s The Revolving Door restaurant and Chef Joshua Berman competing in the event for the first time in the “Seafood” category while Chowder Cook-Off Hall of Famer, The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar and Chef Chris Ferris, will battle it out in the all new “Red” category.

Brix’s Chef Teixeira

The event will also feature Middletown’s Brix Restaurant at Newport Vineyards and Chef Andy Teixeira competing in the “Seafood” category. Brix will be entering its chowder creation for the first at the competition. “We hope the attendees will be able to taste the love and heart we put into preparing it,” said Chef Andy.

There are currently 14 restaurants, from near and as far as Ireland, signed up to participate, see the full list here – http://www.newportwaterfrontevents.com/great-chowder-cook-off/.

“The ‘Seafood’ category will be extremely competitive as last year’s first place winner, Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School – Culinary Arts Program in Taunton, will be stirring things up again,” said Mike Martin, Festival Director for Newport Waterfront Events, a division of Waterfront Productions. “But with a little beginner’s luck, a quality recipe and an enthusiastic staff, The Revolving Door or Brix could keep the title right here in the competition’s backyard of Newport or Middletown and enjoy those all important bragging rights.”

The Mooring’s Chef Ferris

The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar was inducted into the Chowder Cook-Off Hall of Fame after they took the “Seafood” title three times. The restaurant has also placed first in the competition’s “Clam” and “Creative” categories so they thought they would give the new “Red” category a try this year.  Chef Ferris is entering a Rocky Point Red with a Portuguese twist chowder which will feature a little kick to it along with some baby shrimp.

The original and longest running chowder championships in the country, and Rhode Island’s traditional kick-off to the summer season, features traditional and exotic chowders from renowned chefs who serve endless samples to the thousands of festival attendees who also act as judges.  Chefs compete for the coveted titles of “Best Clam”, “Best Seafood” and “Best Red” chowder with prize money awarded to the winners.

Admission to the Great Chowder Cook-Off also includes a variety of entertainment, including Matunuck Oyster Farm’s Newport Oyster Festival featuring its famous lobster rolls and raw bar, Oyster Shucking & Slurping Contests, Beer Shucking, live music from The Ravers, Cee Cee and the Riders and The Brian Scott Band, the Stop & Shop Culinary Stage with cooking demos and educational workshops, sponsor sampling and a number of activities for the littlenecks.  Aside from the all-you-can-eat chowder, there will be a host of other food options for sale from Saugy Inc., Ben & Jerry’s, Kettle Korn Express, Del’s Lemonade and Red’s Food Truck, as well as full bars serving beer, wine and summer-themed cocktails.
