The Official 2018 Newport Tour Guides & Greeters Handbook (Shoreline Press [RI], 2017, $12.95), written by Kenneth Proudfoot, was released this week by the publisher. The fully-illustrated handbook includes comprehensive information about the tour guide business and the wide variety of jobs available in this industry.
Each year millions of tourists and other visitors arrive in Newport from every corner of the world. They come to visit and learn about the city’s many mansions, attractions, and historic sites. Hundreds of professional tour guides and greeters share their knowledge and experience, guiding visitors on bus and walking tours of the city’s history, through Gilded Age mansions, on the waters of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay, and in the air over the island.
The handbook was originally designed especially for the new “Newport Tour Guides & Greeters” Facebook group. It was written to explain and encourage all those who currently work and want to work in the most interesting segment of the tourism and hospitality industries in the city known as “America’s First Resort.”
Tour guides and greeters are an integral part of the tourism industry in Newport and many other thousands of places around the world where historic sites, buildings, homes, and museums preserve the history of the past for present and future generations to learn from. The field is growing and expanding as new historic sites are opened and new tours are created. Ongoing turnover offers continuing job opportunities for college students, part-time workers, and retirees.
The Official 2018 Newport Tour Guides & Greeters Handbook includes detailed listings of Newport’s tour operators, from mansions and historic homes to museums and libraries, harbor and sailing tours, ghost tours, pirate tours, bicycle and running tours, to tours of churches and local tree walking tours. Direct contact information includes addresses, phone numbers, and website links for each of the city’s most important tour operators, sites, cafes, and restaurants.
Descriptions of the daily work and responsibilities of tour guides are detailed, along with the qualities and abilities required for this work. There are also ample details of the city’s history, historic sites, frequently asked questions by visitors, local places to eat and relax, a glossary of greetings in 18 of the most frequently spoken languages by visitors, plus a bibliography with additional published and web-based resources.
