Newport Waterfront Events has announces that, in addition to past winners, a host of new competitors are ready to stir things up at its 36th Annual Great Chowder Cook-Off, taking place on Saturday, June 10th from noon to 6:00 p.m. at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.
For the third consecutive year, What’sUpNewp is a proud partner and sponsor of Newport Waterfront Events and their Annual Great Chowder Cook-Off.
Among the newbies from Rhode Island who are preparing to put their special recipes to the test in the original and longest running “chowdah” championships in the country are Brix at Newport Vineyards in Middletown, Chapel Grille in Cranston, Charlie O’s from Narragansett, Ocean Catch Seafood of Wakefield, Red Stripe in Providence and East Greenwich and Revolving Door in the event’s backyard of Newport. Additional rookies looking for national and international bragging rights, respectively, are Brew Fish Bar and Eatery in Marion, Massachusetts and Nancy’s Barn from across the pond in Ballyliffin County Donegal and the 2016 champion of the All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off held in Newport’s sister city, Kinsale, Ireland.
“After getting a little nostalgic last year and featuring a number of past Chowder Hall of Fame champions in the competition, we wanted to satisfy our chowder loving attendees with a strong line-up of new competitors featuring recipes they might not have had the opportunity to taste before,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, Owner and President of Waterfront Productions, the parent company of Newport Waterfront Events. “A number of past winners are going to be back looking for chowder glory but we can sense a high level of enthusiasm from the new entrants already. They’re definitely in it to win it!” Palmieri added that among those returning to the competition are Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, as well as Open Season Catering in Warwick, Rhode Island who placed second in the Clam Category in 2016 and Bristol Plymouth Technical High School from Taunton, Massachusetts who placed first in the Seafood Category last year. “We will be announcing more competitors in the coming weeks!”
Admission to the Great Chowder Cook-Off also includes a variety of entertainment, including Matunuck Oyster Farm’s Newport Oyster Festival featuring its famous lobster rolls and raw bar, Oyster Shucking & Slurping Contests, Beer Shucking, live music from The Ravers, Cee Cee and the Riders and The Brian Scott Band, the Stop & Shop Culinary Stage with cooking demos and educational workshops, sponsor sampling and a number of activities for the littlenecks. Aside from the all-you-can-eat chowder, there will be a host of other food options for sale from Saugy Inc., Ben & Jerry’s, Kettle Korn Express, Del’s Lemonade and Haven Brothers Mobile, as well as full bars serving beer, wine and summer-themed cocktails.
The event’s partners include Stop & Shop, Hood, Pella Windows & Doors, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Smirnoff Spiked Sparkling Seltzer, Matunuck Oyster Farm, Discover Newport, What’s Up Newp, Fort Adams Trust, I Heart Radio (94 HJY, Coast 93.3), WPRI 12, Fox Providence, The Rhode Show and myRITV.
