Sunday July 16, NIMFest at King Park presents Ladies of Blues & Soul with singer Diane Blue, singer and fiddler Ilana Katz Katz, and an all-star band. Ms. Blue, a soul-stirring vocalist, harmonica player and crowd-pleasing entertainer, will be joined by dynamic blues/old-time fiddler and vocalist Ilana Katz Katz performing classic and rare blues and soul songs.
Diane Blue was voted “Outstanding Female Singer” in The Blues Audience 2015, nominated “Best Blues/R&B Act” and “Best Female Vocalist” by the Providence Phoenix and “Best Local Blues Act” by Motif Magazine in 2007. A former Newporter, now living in Mass, Diane performs at blues festivals and concerts world-wide with blues guitarist extraordinaire Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters, as well as with international artists Luther Guitar Jr. Johnson (former sideman for Muddy Waters), Big Jack Johnson, singers Irma Thomas (the Soul Queen of New Orleans) and Boston’s Toni Lynn Washington, among others. Her 2015 cd, Blues In My Soul, is on Regina Royale Records.
Fiddler Ilana Katz Katz of Newport and Boston plays in the old-time Appalachian folk tradition and also takes deep dives into blues and original music. She’s been featured on stage and in the studio with Blues Music Award winner Ronnie Earl, Barry Levenson of Canned Heat, NY Blues Hall of Famer Bobby Radcliff, and multi-Grammy nominated Cedric Watson. Her 2016 recording, “Moving On,” features Illana’s vocals, including original material and her scat singing while playing fiddle.
Sunday gazebo concerts run 3-6pm and are presented free by the City of Newport with support from Mrs. Dorrance H. Hamilton. Lawn seating, bring a chair or blanket. Enjoy food and beverage from Brunch Belly food truck. No rain date. For more information, contact Newport Recreation at 401-845-5800 or check NIMFest Newport on Facebook.
