Emmanuel Church awards $10,000 in grants to those in need

Emmanuel Church of Newport announced on Monday that they have recently awarded $10,000 in grant funds to help stabilize people’s lives with housing, food security, and employment resources.

In 2001 Margit Baum of Newport bequeathed a Fund for Emmanuel Church to distribute to those in need in Newport.   The Reverend Dr. Anita Schell said “ The Emmanuel Church Vestry had decided in 2016 to give the annual grant to local agencies whose sole purpose is to serve those in need.  Each year local agencies are invited to apply for the grant funds.

This year the monies were shared with three Newport agencies; Housing Hotline, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center and Turning Around Ministries.  Emmanuel Church selected these agencies for their programs to provide housing assistance, food, and employment training through their direct contact with those individuals in need.

“We are truly grateful to Emmanuel Church and The Baum Fund for supporting The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center’s Hunger and Wellness programs. We are able to continue feeding so many of our Newport County neighbors in need because of the support of this fund. We are so proud to carry on the legacy of Margit Baum through our work here at The Center,” writes Heather Strout , Assistant Executive Director of The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.
