Cider, Cider, Cider. It seems to be the next big thing in New England.

With so many ciders to choose from how do you chose just one? For over 200 years Cider makers have stuck to the basics: Crisp apples and sugar. Within the past 3 years it seems more Cider House’s open each year with a ton of more options. Cider maker’s started experimenting with barrels from local breweries and using ingredients such as local maple syrup, a variety of exotic fruits or aging the cider in bourbon or whiskey barrels.

As of 2016, a huge selection of Cider’s starting pouring into Rhode Island. In New England alone, we are now able to get a few from the Boston area such as Bantam Cider, Look out Farm, Stormalong and the fast-growing Downeast.

Our cider pick of the week goes out to Champlain Cider out of Vermont! For the past 18 years, the family owned orchard has been producing their local cider right from their orchard in Shoreham, Vermont. Experimenting with specialty apples such as Heirloom, Macintosh, Empire and locally grown Vermont fruit with organic sugar. Some are sweet and some are dry which gives a diversity to the cider. If you’re a white wine (preferably Chardonnay) drinker you’ll love this stuff as they add Chardonnay yeast to the fermentation process.

It wasn’t until two years ago we welcomed Champlain into Rhode Island and couldn’t be more thrilled to have another local Cider on draft here at The Wharf Pub. Being able to get the cider was great in itself and being able to get limited local batches has been even better.
Huge thank you to Allie Stote who is always sending us the limited batches of Champlain and continuously keeping us up to date with everything Champlain has to offer.

Here is what we currently have at The Wharf Pub. Stay tuned for our Cider event with Champlain come May paired with Apple Cider Donuts!
