Challenge Met: Kiernan Challenge Raises Over $100,000 for MLK Hunger Services


Philanthropists Peter D. Kiernan and Eaddo Kiernan join MLK Community Center Executive Director Marilyn Warren has announced the challenge has been met: donors from across Newport County and beyond have given more than $58,000 to the Kiernan Challenge benefiting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.

“It’s a great day to be a Newporter. Eaddo and I want to say thank you to the Newport County community for stepping up in such a remarkable way,” said Peter Kiernan.

The Kiernans provided the matching incentive for the campaign and will donate $50,000 to match donations made to the MLK Community Center.

“Today’s a perfect day to meet our goal. Our staff and volunteer crew have spent the day distributing hundreds of Thanksgiving meal baskets to hungry families. , We’ll do that Tuesday and Wednesday, too. It’s that kind of generosity at work for the most vulnerable among us that makes the Center so special” , said MLK Center Executive Director Warren.

“What a great way to kick off the holiday season. I’m so proud of this community. We set an ambitious goal and the community answered the challenge. One hundred and seventy three donors gave to the campaign.” Kiernan explained. “We’re proud to stand with them to fight hunger in our community.“

A community resource since 1922, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center’s innovative programs provide hunger relief, educational and community support for nearly 3,000 diverse residents of Newport County.
