Run, jog, or walk past rolling fields and beaches on Saturday, June 16th at Norman Bird Sanctuary’s 12th Annual 5K Run/Walk in memory of David Leys Jr.

More than 400 runners start at the Norman Bird Sanctuary Welcome Center, travel past Hanging Rock, Second Beach and Sachuest Point before finishing by the Third Beach dunes in front of cheering spectators. Kids can join the fun with the Frosty Freez Kids Run, a quarter-mile dash past fields filled with birdhouses. A USA Track & Field sanctioned race, the 5K also allows competitive runners to qualify for future races.

“This special 5K route gives runners and walkers a beautiful view of the land they are helping to protect,” said Natasha Harrison, executive director, “We are delighted to welcome families to celebrate open space and connect with the community.”

Runners and spectators meet back at Norman Bird Sanctuary for complimentary refreshments, music by Newport Sound & Entertainment, and an awards ceremony honoring the runners and supporters.

The proceeds from this event directly support Norman Bird Sanctuary’s mission to preserve 325 acres of wildlife habitat and provide educational opportunities for learners of all ages.

The 12th Annual 5K also honors the memory of David Leys Jr., a native islander and great friend who helped create this special event. After a courageous five year battle against ALS, Dave passed away in August of 2017.
