The Boston Celtics and National Grid teamed up yesterday to unveil their newly renovated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) lab at Aquidneck School in Middletown. The partners presented several donated items as part of the event, including digital video cameras, an interactive whiteboard, a weather station and various STEAM kits. New flooring and furniture were also integrated into the lab’s upgrade, along with freshly painted walls with new murals from City Year Care Force.
“It’s great to be able to help unveil and provide something that can inspire and impact these kids and their academic lives,” said Celtics Forward Guerschon Yabusele. “There’s lots of exciting and interesting new toys in this lab now which I think will only help the students.”

Horan, President and COO of National Grid Rhode Island. “Through the Energy Assist contest these kids showed a true passion for the STEAM subjects and as the energy leaders of tomorrow we want to help provide them with the best tools to reach their full potential.”
The Aquidneck School was chosen as the recipient for the new lab following the Energy Assist Conservation Contest, which ran from April 5 to April 19 earlier this year. Students had the opportunity to submit videos showcasing their efforts to conserve energy at their schools using the hashtag #EnergyAssist. Tens of thousands of K-8 students from across the region participated in the campaign.
Several Aquidneck School students had the opportunity to try out the newly donated equipment during the event, while Yabusele, Horan, Aquidneck School principal Michelle Fonseca, Celtics Mascot “Lucky” the Leprechaun, and Celtics Legend Dana Barros interacted with the various STEAM affiliated stations throughout the lab.
The STEAM lab is part of National Grid’s ongoing commitment to help motivate and educate the next generation of energy leaders, thus helping to build the workforce of the future.
