“Not that long ago, Rhode Islanders were throwing up their hands and giving up. And now, we’re rolling up our sleeves and getting back to work,” Governor Gina Raimondo states in a “Why I’m Running Video” on Tuesday, her official re-election campaign announcement.

“We’ve gone from having the 36th worst economy in America to the 9th best. We’re becoming a state again where everybody can keep up and get ahead. I love Rhode Island. And I’m ready to keep working with you to bring about the change that people need and deserve. And that’s why today, I’m announcing that I’m running for re-election as your Governor,” Raimondo also states in the video.

Raimondo will face off against fellow Democrats Matt Brown, Spencer Dickinson, and Paul Roselli in a primary later this year. The Democratic winner will take on the Republican gubernatorial candidate (Giovanni Feroce, Allan Fung, or Patricia Morgan), and the Independent candidates ( Joe Trillo and Dr. Luis-Daniel Munoz).

Also on her website, she announces and states;

Four years ago we had the highest unemployment rate in America, and wages were stuck. Today, we’ve gone from 36th in America for wages and jobs to ninth best. We are moving to clean, renewable energy, and making major investments in our children’s education, our workers’ training, and our roads and bridges.

To me, this means the difference between people throwing up their hands and giving up, to rolling up their sleeves and going to work. It means stronger families, stronger communities and children who know they can grow up and stay here if they choose. After our lost decades, Rhode Island is once again becoming a state where everyone can get ahead and have a good life – no matter where you’re from or where you live.

We’ve come a long way. We can’t go backwards. That’s why today, I’m announcing my re-election for Governor of Rhode Island.

I am going to stay focused on bringing the change our people need and deserve. Let’s finish the job we started together.

On January 6, 2015, Gina M. Raimondo became the 75th Governor of Rhode Island and the state’s first female governor.
